Aaslaug Vevle (1950) grew up in Hauge on the island of Osterøy in Western Norway. She was a lively girl, but poor health meant that she could not express herself as freely as her peers. She was small, thin and delicate, and despite many hospital stays, no doctor was able to give her the right diagnosis. She could not keep down her food, and this had a negative effect on her growth and wellbeing. Despite these health problems, Aaslaug enjoyed summer stays on her mother's island, Rostøy in Austevoll. Fishing, swimming and spending time with elderly relatives and siblings made life good, despite everything. Finally, a doctor found out what was wrong with the girl. She had celiac disease; a digestive and immune disorder that has a negative effect on the small intestine. Her diet was changed, and Aaslaug had a brand new life.
