One day during Advent Anno Domini 2024, I got a phone call from Bishop Erik Varden in Trondheim. He wondered if I would take on a commission for the decoration of the Catholic chapel at Stiklestad, here in Norway. The chapel is a relatively small wooden structure which was raised in the 1930s. The exterior is painted dark red, and the interior is partly green with terracotta red details and a white ceiling. The area of the apse has a hand-carved altar. Above the altar, there is a vault which I have been asked to decorate. The Bishop has suggested a Christ Pantocrator in a large circular “medallion” style, with worshipping angels on either side. Above these images there will be a starry sky — a very old motif in Christian iconography.
