The major purpose of iconographic art is to see and, in a spiritual sense, to be seen. Contemplating icons is a spiritual exercise which can enrich our faith deeply. There is an aesthetic aspect of it which invites us to dwell on beauty. With that, there is an intellectual dimension where we seek to understand the symbols, types, and metaphors. For most individuals, though, it is the spiritual depth of the icons which kindle in believers a heartfelt longing and bring us into communion with Christ and the saints.
